Let Me Bee

Nepal faces a supply gap in honey production, with annual demand exceeding 8,000 metric tons while domestic output is only about 5,600 metric tons. With high potential for beekeeping and growing interest of women in income-generating activities, we initiated a bee farming project led by our local partner Jhuwani Community Library in Chitwan aiming to foster women’s financial independence and entrepreneurship. Besides providing the women with beekeeping training, we will also facilitate in the production and sales of honey, beeswax and related products.

 

Project Status

SEPTEMBER 2026

Our local partner has selected 15 candidates based on in-depth interviews and commitment of the women to invest in 5 beehives themselves. That commitment is an important first step. To build their businesses, they will need equipment, practical guidance and support and time to develop their businesses.

This project looks beyond the 15 businesses. Together with the women, we want to raise awareness in their local communities about honey as a foodstuff and demonstrate how women can contribute to more sustainable agriculture through beekeeping. After all, bees also help with the pollination of crop and are critical to maintain the balance in nature.

On 28 September the inauguration ceremony was held to kick off the beekeeping project. Besides the candidates and the members of the Jhuwani Community Library, also the local government was present as they will also be supporting this project. Anil Aryal of the Jhuwani Community Library will be the project manager for this project.

 

Funding

6 Degrees will fund this project and will start a fundraising campaign shortly to sponsor 100 beehives for the women.

Objectives

  • Train 15 women in beekeeping practices with modern techniques

  • Support the establishment of 15 beekeeping farms

  • Facilitate the production and sales of honey, beewax and related products

  • Provide mentorship and access to markets

  • Raise community awareness about honey’s health benefits and women’s roles in sustainability
